Company M&amp;H Tires began producing them for motorsport, specifically dragster racing. Today, they are a common part of virtually all motor racing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The characteristic feature of slick tires is their completely smooth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/dezen-pneumatiky\">tread<\/a>. <strong>A slick tire has no tread pattern, so it is completely smooth on the surface (slick).<\/strong> The absence of cuts in the tire tread maximizes the contact area between the tire and the road, thus ensuring <strong>maximum vehicle traction<\/strong>. At the same time, these tires are made from a special softer compound that further increases the tyre&#8217;s grip on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10454 size-large\" title=\"slick tire\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_005-600x289.jpg\" alt=\"slick tire\" width=\"600\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_005-600x289.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_005-250x121.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_005-207x100.jpg 207w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_005-768x371.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_005.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/> <\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Slick tires must not be used in normal traffic! <\/strong>This is due to the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/aquaplaning\">aquaplaning<\/a> when driving in wet conditions. This is because the tread of a slick tire does not have any grooves to channel water away from the track under the tire and thus help prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/aquaplaning\">aquaplaning<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> Another <strong>problem with a wet track is that it causes a sharp drop in temperature below the tire&#8217;s optimum serviceability range<\/strong>, see slick tire temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">You will therefore only encounter slick tires in motor racing or karting. A special case is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/pneumatika-semi-slick\/\">semi-slick tire<\/a>, which can also be used in normal traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Advantages of slick tires:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">slick tires have a larger contact area between the road and the tire, therefore achieving greater grip (adhesion)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">the contact patch is continuous, so there is no bending of the individual tread blocks, resulting in improved tire performance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">have a stiffer sidewall construction which improves the transmission of lateral forces when cornering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">the tire performs well under high stress even at high temperatures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">low noise levels due to the absence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/dezen-pneumatiky\/\">tread pattern<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Disadvantages of slick tires:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">not possible to use in wet and rainy conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">shorter life due to the desire to maximise traction and the way they are used, mileage of slick tires can be less than 200 kilometres<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">to properly exploit the potential of slick tires it is necessary to reach the operating temperature of the tires, below this temperature the tires are virtually non-functional<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">the lack of tread makes them sensitive to uneven surfaces<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Slick tire construction:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The main design difference between slick tires and conventional tires is <strong>the absence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/dezen-pneumatiky\/\">tread pattern<\/a><\/strong>. Thanks to the completely smooth tread without cuts and sipes, the tire lies on the road with <strong>the maximum possible surface area<\/strong>. Since the tread of a slick is not made up of individual blocks of rubber, but is actually <strong>one large continuous block<\/strong>, the tire is better able to transmit large lateral and longitudinal forces. There is no bending of the tread blocks. All of this results in improved handling and traction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014.jpg\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10463 size-large\" title=\"slick tire cut\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014-600x120.jpg\" alt=\"slick tire cut\" width=\"600\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014-600x120.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014-250x50.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014-768x154.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014-1536x308.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_014.jpg 1837w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Another design improvement that provides increased lateral stiffness to the slick is <strong>the reinforced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/konstrukce-pneumatiky\/\">sidewall<\/a><\/strong>. The stiffer tire deforms less under lateral forces. This ensures greater stability, better cornering behaviour and faster steering response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">A very important aspect for the correct use of slicks is the choice of the correct compound hardness, which is directly influenced by temperature. For example, tire manufacturer Michelin offers three hardnesses, graded according to road temperature. Dry slick tires are offered in three different compounds: <strong>S7 &#8211; Soft, S8 &#8211; Medium, S9 &#8211; Hard<\/strong>. The different rubber compounds guarantee a wide range of applications from sprinting to endurance racing. The wet compound <strong>P2 is designed for the wet track<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1.jpg\">&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10465 size-large\" title=\"slick tire use table\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1-600x387.jpg\" alt=\"slick tire use table\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1-600x387.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1-250x161.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1-155x100.jpg 155w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/obr_clanky\/slick_015-1.jpg 1537w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Slick tire temperature:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">From the above compound table it is clear that <strong>the performance of slick tires is highly dependent on the temperature of the tire itself<\/strong>. Warmed up slick tire has a temperature of around 80 &#8211; 100 \u00b0C. Conventional tires do not even reach such temperatures and would lose their properties at these temperatures. Slick tires need to be kept within their temperature window during the race, below the optimum temperature range (so called &#8220;cold&#8221;) they have very little grip. It can be said that, an unheated slick tire has significantly less grip even compared to a normal sports tire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Keeping the tires in the optimum temperature range so that they are sufficiently warm can only really be done in hard racing on the track. <strong>In normal traffic, the optimum temperature window is virtually impossible to achieve.<\/strong> This is why slick tyres don&#8217;t make sense for fast driving on county roads in dry weather, you won&#8217;t be able to keep them warm. Not to mention the fact that they are banned for normal road use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">In order to allow the racer to make the most of the tires immediately after the start, so-called <strong>tire heating blanket<\/strong> are used. These tire warmers warm up the tire until the last moment before the start. Cycling is a process in which the tire heats up to its optimal temperature range to achieve maximum grip and then cools down. During this cycle, chemical processes occur, leading to the gradual hardening of the rubber compound. The number of cycles a tire can endure before becoming too rigid depends on various factors such as heating duration, vehicle weight, driving style, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Pressure in slick tires:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Even contact between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autolexicon.net\/articles\/konstrukce-pneumatiky\/\">tread<\/a> and the road is important for proper functioning and tire life. It is important to remember that the size and shape of the tire footprint is primarily influenced by the correct tire pressure. <strong>Slick tires have a higher operating temperature than conventional tires, for this reason slicks are inflated to a lower initial pressure (i.e. cold).<\/strong> As the tire warms up during the race, the tire pressure rises to the ideal final value. Correct and stable pressure value = ideal tire shape in the cross-section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The idea of filling tires with compressed nitrogen instead of the usual air also comes from the race tracks. Nitrogen, which is a significant component of normal air (78%), is more stable under pressure than air alone and has less thermal expansion. The so-called <strong>dry nitrogen in the tire mitigates pressure fluctuations due to thermal expansion of the gases<\/strong>. This is why nitrogen-filled tires are used in racing, where even small pressure changes can affect the handling of high-performance race cars moving at the limit of drivability. Yet, logically, tire wear does occur. Circular holes located on the tread surface are used to indicate the tread thickness.<\/span><\/p>\nngg_shortcode_6_placeholder\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The limits of grip of slick tires:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Slick tires can push the driving limits of a vehicle noticeably further, there can be no argument about that. However, one has to take into account that vehicle breakaway occurs at higher speeds and suddenly! <strong>Maximum slick tires traction is achieved with tire slip of around seven to ten per cent.<\/strong> If the driver doesn&#8217;t let up, the slip exceeds the threshold beyond which the adhesion drops sharply. This characteristic of slick tires requires considerable skill and experience on the part of the driver. For a better idea of how slick tires can make you faster on the race track, German magazine Sport Auto published this test: At the Hockenheimring, a sports car with slick tires completed a lap in 1:14 minutes.
